Preparing Your Home Before Vacation

Your residence should be as well! Not only can careful preparation help safeguard your house and possessions while you travel, but it may also help your family save money on souvenirs! Prepare your home for your absence with these five simple suggestions.

Whether you’re on a weekend road trip or staying at a lake home, remember to use some of these energy-saving strategies to avoid incurring additional costs while you’re away.

1. Switch off all lights.

If you choose to leave any lights on as a security measure, consider investing in an automated timer. It may be configured to turn on lights in the late evening and early morning hours, therefore avoiding energy consumption throughout the day.

2. Reduce the temperature of your air conditioner.

While it is necessary to keep your home’s air flowing while you are away, you may significantly reduce your energy use by setting your thermostat to 85 degrees. If you have a programmed thermostat, just choose the “vacation” setting to ensure that the inside temperature remains safe and efficient while you are away.

3. Disconnect appliances and electrical devices.

Even when unplugged, anything connected to the wall might continue to use energy. Avoid wasting standby power by disconnecting your gadgets or utilizing a smart power strip. Remember to disconnect your washing and dryer as well.

4. Make necessary adjustments to your water heater (s).

Reduce the temperature of your water heater to “low” or “vacation” mode. If your pool also has a heater, consider investing in a pool cover that can assist limit heat loss, saving you money on reheating costs.

5. Refrigerator:

If you’re just going to be gone for a few days, raise the temperature of your refrigerator a few degrees. If you’re going to be gone for more than two weeks, clean and empty the refrigerator, prop open the door, and disconnect the unit.
